Information for Learners Driving Licence Holders

The Learners Driving Licence is administrated by Road Traffic (Control) [CAP 29].

Before getting a drivers licence, one must obtain a learner’s licence. 

 The learners’ licence form consists of three forms that can be collected from the office.

  • Application for learners licence form.
  • Application for driving licence form.
  • Medical Certificate form.

PROCEDURE

  1. The first two forms are to be filled by the applicant.
  2. The medical certificate form is to be taken to a person of medical profession/institution such as a private doctor, public hospital, or local dispensary.
  3. The completed form is to be taken down to the Taxpayer Service office whereby the fees are to be paid for.
  4. Applicants also need to provide a certified copy of the original birth certificate with the application.

 

LICENCE CATEGORIES

  • The licence categories include:
  • Motorcycle less than 50 cc
  • Motorcycle more than 50cc but less than 125cc (50cc – 125cc)
  • Motorcycle more than 125cc
  • Motor vehicle- this includes vehicles such as cars, 2WD and 4WD (double cabin) trucks.
  • Heavy Motor Vehicle – these are vehicles with a carrying capacity exceeding 3tonnes.
  • Common Vehicle – passenger vehicles used as a form of public transport, such as, buses and carriers.

 

CONDITIONS

1. Motorcycle less than 50cc: Persons must be 14 years and over.

4. Motor vehicle:

Persons must be 18 years and over. This category is a MUST when obtaining a drivers licence.

2. Motorcycle 50cc – 125cc: Persons must be 16 years and over. 

5. Heavy Motor Vehicle:

Applicant must have a motor vehicle category BEFORE applying for this licence category.

− Applicant must be 21 years and over.

− Applicant must have a driving experience of at least 3 years. 

3. Motorcycle more than 125cc: Persons must be 18 years and over.

6. Common vehicle:

Applicant must have a motor vehicle category BEFORE applying for this licence category.

− Applicant must be 21 years and over.

 

FEE

VT1500 for each category.

 

LICENCE DURATION

  • Learner’s licence is valid for 1 year from the date the licence is paid for and issued. For example, if the licence is paid and ssued on 10/10/10; then it will be valid until 10/10/11.
  • Within this period, applicants can go for their examination at the Vanuatu Police Traffic Section to get their Certificate of Ability to Drive.
  • If an applicant happens to fail the test or still doesn’t feel confident to drive, then the applicant can always renew the licence the following year. The same fees would also apply.
  • Learner’s licence payment is only accepted BEFORE 3pm during office opening hours because the receipt number has to be recorded.
